Identity Weaving

Students worked on creating multimedia pieces  that expressed aspects of themselves, using cloth, pastels and watercolour. They then took these pieces and wove them into a collaborative piece. 

It was a laid back day, with lots of acting, goofing off, and working together.

In the end they liked their paintings too much to leave them in the weaving, so they took them home as solo pieces.

A book by Bia, a nine year old budding artist who loves to draw princesses in pen and take care of her younger sister.

A book by Bird, a ten year old who likes riding his bike, robots, dogs, and drawing intricate houses full of colour and imagination.

Ghokam's book is full of detail, and she works really hard to get everything right before adding colour. Her dream job is to be an artist.

This weekend the students worked on creating paintings of their dream futures. I asked them to think about what they want to be doing, or who they want to be, in ten or twenty years time. They were eager to get started on creating these paintings and they made some lovely work by the end of the day.

These paintings will go into their identity books, which are coming together well (pictures to come).

I'm asking the students to make images of their future to provide a creative and positive means for imagining their futures. It's been great to see their enthusiasm for these ideas, and to see their pride in the work they create. I'm hoping to provide a positive experience for them, and to empower them through these lessons. Here are their pictures!

Painting their dreams

The prompt for today's upper level class was "What is your dream for the World?"

After a while of translation and interpretation, the students brainstormed four dreams that they have for the world. 

Ideas spanned from getting rid of smoking, to no thunderstorms, to it always being sunny.

Most decided to paint an ideal world full of beauty, flowers, and the jungle. It was wonderful to see them all dive in and become engrossed in painting. We ended with a mini critique and a lot of clapping.
